Introducing Routelines

Thu Mar 29, 2012, 6:08 PM
Simply roads. Every road.

Intricate posters of cities from around the world outlined only by their roads in beautiful detail. Each poster includes the entire official boundaries of a city as well as surrounding areas. Several high-quality materials, sizes, and colors with framing options are available.

Routelines was inspired by data. After working on several recent data visualization projects focusing on open data, I got the itch to create something physical to which everyone could instantly relate.

Roads are everywhere. We travel them daily and rarely give them a second thought. They outline our neighborhoods and cities and sometimes define cultural boundaries. They're usually only visible on maps, covered by labels and accompanied by landmarks. I wanted to see what they look like on their own.

Each city appears to have its own personality and sub-personalities based on patterns drawn by its roads. Whether or not these personalities coincide with its culture is something I leave to the viewers.

Routelines posters comprise a tremendous amount of data. Each poster showcases every road of a city—no matter how small. The posters are formatted to include an entire city's official boundaries. Roads from surrounding areas are included to complete the picture. After all, roads don't stop at city boundaries.

Posters for over 50 major cities around the world have been created and many more are planned. Over time, more will be posted to deviantART, but until then, the entire collection is available at Routelines.com

Don't worry, still greatly enjoy fractals and will probably make more in the future, but this is a fun side project.

I would love the Dallas one, but it seems a bit off to me. I have literally been staring at it for a while, and I think it's just zoomed out a bit too much. Your well past Dallas county on the right and bottom sides. Damn near hitting Hunt county :p

Still, I like them, and do want the largest size for my wall. I love my city, and as a normal Texan, have way too damn much prise in my state and city ;p

Good eye, hornsholdmyhalo. Dallas is fairly large so I had to zoom out quite a bit to fit the entire official city boundaries in the poster. As a guide for boundaries, I'm using the red outline when searching for a city on Google, for example, the dense areas of Dallas contain Fort Worth, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Lewisville, etc. Dallas is actually just the lower right corner of that cluster, hence it looking slightly off center.

Thanks for looking though!
